Building codes
On the 29th of September 2006, a new Spanish building code came into effect. These guidelines, which contain regulations and instructions for the construction of new buildings, consist of the five main paragraphs HE1 to HE5:

HE1 includes measures in order to reduce the energy demand (“LIDER” programme), HE2 refers to the efficiency of heating systems and HE3 comprises the efficiency of lighting installations. The paragraphs HE4 and HE5 are concerned with the exploitation of thermal solar energy for domestic hot water and photovoltaic systems on rooftops.

Ecolabels for energy efficiency
Since the 31 of October 2007, the certification of buildings regarding their energy efficiency is regulated by law. The main goals of these new regulations are the promotion of the construction of buildings with a low energy demand and the guarantee of a higher transparency on the real estate market. By this means, even laypersons with a lack of technical expert knowledge can estimate the energy efficiency of a building.

The assessment procedure bases on the CO2 emissions of a building and includes a check of the heating, cooling, hot domestic water and illumination system. Certificates vary from A (very energy-efficient) to G (little energy-efficient). The team of ERIN RENOVABLES S.L. awards ecolabels for the energy efficiency of buildings. Energy audits
Owing to the increase of energy prices, energy audits have proved to be an effective measure to cut down on energy costs. This is of special importance for companies which wand to reduce costs in order to be more competitive. The audit procedure includes a calculation of a company’s energy consumption and its parameters. Afterwards, various measures in order to improve the energy efficiency are proposed.
